Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I am definitely getting a cam with a removable card instead of a tape. Also, thank you for the external microphone suggestion. I will do some research on my own to make an intelligent decision at the time to make my purchase. Love your videos specially the father’s day. I relate to that one very much, especially now that I am a father myself. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Carlos. I unfortunately can’t keep track of consumer video cameras because they turn around so quickly. I want to make a post soon about what to look for in general, but for now, you really can’t go wrong with Sony or Canon. Go widescreen HD. The quality you can get with a $300 consumer camera now is THE SAME as a $8,000 camera. It’s crazy. Go removable media (not harddrive). Don’t bother with tape anymore – the mechanisms are the first things to break. Definitely get a camera with an external mic input. Hope that helps a bit.
Matt! I love your work. I can always use a good laugh. I was reading a few of the comments here and in one of them, you said “don’t get caught up in buying fancy cameras. There are $400 HD cams that work great”..So, the million dollar question is – can you recommend a “Tressla” video cam that I can check out before running to the no so “Best buy” store? Huh huh? …and, would such cam have a good audio to make a good video? I wanted to buy your old cam from Ebay but lost that chance. Thanks buddy.
Ashley, I was the same way when I was 16. Just start doing everything on your own – write stories, short scripts, and then take the camera outside with your friends and make videos. Experiment. Have fun. Make music videos to your favorite song. If there are any local productions going on, intern with them. The “business” stuff can be worried about much, much later.
Hi Jay. Most of my videos don’t cost me anything except time (which as you know can be very valuable). But since I own the camera, the mic and the editing software, etc. the rest is just about the writing and trying to be resourceful with what I have around the house.
I currently shoot with a Sony FX-7, but don’t get caught up in buying fancy cameras. There are are $400 HD cams that work great.
This probably is a very open-ended question, but I am curious as to how much it costs (low to high) to produce some of these videos and what kind of camera, etc., you used for the guy advice videos…
I am only 16. :( But I’m very eager for new information, and aspire to get into the filming buisness as well as writing. I just need (since my last comment was so lengthy) some guidance to where should I head first when it comes to filming.
Matt,
First of all I’d like to say thanks.
Your videos are funny, clever, and well done. It really looks like you’ve put alot of time into your videos. I admire it. I really want to work in the filming industry.
The problem is I do not know where to start. I have written many stories and put on plays but adapting any idea into film is my deliemma. What is your educated advice on what the first step is?
Also, how do you write a script that would interest the general public ( meaning youtubers, etc.)?
Any advice you have would highly be appreciated.
Thanks. Your great,
Ashley Thomas
Don’t neglect learning how to write. Filmmaking is craft, and you can learn that craft and be great at it… but unless you just want to be a technician (camera man, gaffer, grip, etc.), you need to also study screenwriting. Good stories and good writing are what people respond to – not slick filmmaking.
Hey Matt,
So my name is Kevin Wilson, and i’ve been doing film work for about 3 years now (mainly for my counties Sheriff office) and have started to do a few short films. I also just got accepted into the Colorado Film School, and I was wondering if you had any recomendations on how to succeed in a Film School? Also i was wondering if you had any tips or hints, that you wouldn’t mind sharing to help succeed in the industry?
Thank You,
Kevin Wilson

Dear Matt,
Here’s a joke you were looking for on Youtube:
One day a man walked into the bar. As he sat down, he opened his briefcase and took out a tiny piano and piano player. The bartender asks,”Hey, where’d you get the player?”
The man replies,”There’s a genie down the street giving out free wishes, you should try it.”
“Ok, I’ll check it out!” the bartender said joyfully.
So the bartender walks around the corner and he walks around the block, and there sits a fat, Asian man.
“I am the genie,” he says with a funny accent. “I will give you one wish. Rules: No more than one wish.”
So the bartender says, “I want a million bucks!”
Suddenly, a couple thousand deer fall out of the sky! The bartender, in rage, storms back to the bar and yells at the man with the briefcase,”That fatty is a rip off! I asked for a million bucks and I got a million antelope!”
The man replies,”You think I asked for a 12-inch pianist?”
Matt, normally people who are a big hit on medias would be too secluded from the fans or just too ‘cool’ to even reply a comment. But you’re different :)
Once you famous (even you’re already are) don’t forget who you are and where you’re from…
I like editing videos and most of em I just to some tributes about something but never a drama or story. Maybe because I’m still at my senior year and busy..
But you know what? What truly hit me was a good storyline from a good writer/producer/director…
That what kept my inspiration going… Thanks a loads, mate :)
Hi Patrick. That’s very exciting – I’ve always heard great things about that school. My advice would be to not just learn all the technical aspects, but learn writing as well. That’s how you’ll find your “voice” as a filmmaker.

Thanks a bunch matt. :) I probably will have many more questions in the future so this might not be the last you hear of me.
You bet!

That’s quite an involved question, Ashley! How old are you so I can have a better understanding of where you’re coming from?
