Just wanted to offer some advice about choosing a YouTube username, as I see people making this mistake a lot. Read closely because naming your account is where you can really hurt your channel forever… or help it forever. NOTE: If you’ve already done this, please don’t panic and abandon your account! I’ll talk about that scenario further down. If you want to create a popular YouTube channel, it’s important that you create a strong and memorable “brand” of your own. A huge part of that is picking a good username. Unfortunately, most people spend about two minutes deciding this, when they should take two days, weeks, or more. Seriously. If you’re going to give YouTube a lot of time and effort, it’s a huge decision that should be made carefully.
Here’s what most people do…
Nope. In something of a panic, she starts throwing in random letters and numbers and comes up with “x1JenniferJones924x“. Yay! That’s not taken! *slap forehead* Jennifer then happily starts promoting her YouTube channel, and over the next year, wonders why it’s such an uphill battle. One big problem here of course is that “x1JenniferJones924x” is downright impossible to remember. Jennifer might make amazing videos – but her channel will always be handicapped by a username that is too clunky and cumbersome. Getting a YouTube account off the ground is hard enough, so why make it harder?
Here’s what I think you should strive for… You probably won’t be able to hit all of these, but cover as many as you can: 1. Keep it as short as possible. This has become increasingly difficult as the number of YouTube accounts has grown into the hundreds of millions. Even so, you should still make an attempt to nab a short username. Some of my favorite account/brand names are just a made-up words: Nalts, Onision, and Smosh. They’re short, fun, and easy to remember. Can you come up with a shortie of your own? Good. It’s probably taken, but give it a try anyway. 2. Make it catchy and memorable. “x1JenniferJones924x” obviously doesn’t fall into this category. If she had spent more time thinking about it, she might have come up with something more creative and cute, like Jonezie, MissJonzie, or JonezieJ. A catchy username will literally catch you. It recently happened to me with a channel called iCrazyBitchTV. I saw that name and just had to click. It’s an example of how a catchy name will work for you, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When I mention my friend HappySlip to people, the first thing they think of is something sexual. That’s the bad news. But when I tell the story of why she chose the username, they not only laugh, but they never forget it. That’s the good news – her brand name is very memorable and catchy. Some of the other account names I like are RoosterTeeth, VlogBrothers, MyBigImagination, RatedRR, and HouseholdHacker. Tough to forget those, isn’t it? 3. Consider your schtick. Are you doing a cooking show? Make-up tutorials? Sketch comedy? You obviously want to consider that when choosing a name. Make it relevant. I don’t care how many times you smack face-first into that UNAVAILABLE wall — you should never resort to jamming random numbers into your account name. Again, just think about all the massive amounts of time you’re going to put into this endeavor. The last thing you want something constantly slowing you down. Granted, there are exceptions like JPizzle1122 or JulianSmith87. These guys are extraordinarily successful, but I still think their usernames hurt them a bit. “But Matt, there’s nothing available! I looked up everything!” Time to dig deeper. Try this as an exercise: Take a piece of paper and write a column of 50 words on the left side. These words should describe you, your videos, or your brand (smart folks call them adjectives). On the right side, write your first name, then your name last below it. Start drawing lines to connect them. Connect different combinations of words, and flip them around until you find something catchy and memorable. Add more words. Really dig deep. It may take days or weeks, but when you find a name that crackles and is available, I promise you’ll be glad you put in the effort. DON’T GET DOWN. If you’ve been building your channel for months or years and your account name isn’t to be desired, don’t trash it. You’ve worked too hard for those subscribers. You might as well continue on. However, if you do want to switch, what I suggest you do is make a new account, and simply upload a video to the old one, letting your subscribers know that you’re “moving”. You won’t get everyone to switch over, but you’ll definitely get some. It’s better than starting from scratch anyway. Two more suggestions. When creating an account name, type in your chosen capital letters. YouTube often displays them accordingly. This helps because “bretttheintern” is much harder to read then “BrettTheIntern” – “ijustine” harder than “iJustine“. See what I’m sayin’? Still can’t find anything available? Take your favorite idea and try adding “TV” at the end, in all caps. After all, your channel is like your own TV show. I hope this helps you get started on YouTube. Could you answer any time soon? .
Hi, for my YT account, I want my first part to be ShivDes then a number/s after that. Which would be the best? 1,3,5,7,10,123,525,TV are all taken. I’m thinking of 789,42,777. Which one would be the best?
@Ema Pretty good! My only concern is that it would be hard to spell if someone was trying to remember it. Was it KickAss? KicckAss? Or was it KickkAss?
Mine is KkicAss, im not sure if its very good but leave a comment please
(oh, and also larkling… I want to be able to animate things OTHER than cats… lol)
Gahh!!! I’m stuck between these few:
furmiliar
Fermiliar
WinterWhiskers
whiskermoon
I’m girl, but I’ll be animating mostly cats. Which do you think is the best??
Well, since you said Plz. ;) Which of these names is most relevant to the kind of videos you make? 666vids suggest something bad, devlish, etc. AwesomeVIRAL is great – but are your videos viral? If not, people will see that as a joke. Remember, it’s not just catchy but relevant. …The others I’m not so crazy about.
Failure?! Come on now. That’s a bit harsh. I think DylVerse is pretty good. Gets a little tricky in the spelling – I’d probably remember “DylanUniverse” before DylVerse. Or “DylandsUniverse”.
Try the exercise I suggest of writing down all possibilities. Mix and match names… you’ll eventually come up with something great.
That’s a great one. Notice how the letters “y” and “d” together are low then tall, making the words more distinguishable. Same with the “g” and the “b”. Thanks for writing, Kirk.
Well what’s the name?
Hi Kate. That sounds like a plan, although I wouldn’t get too “random” about it or you’ll end up with a name that doesn’t make much sense. Make sure your list is of relevant words to what you do, so vlog, vlogging, vlogger, short films, shorts, shortz, …shorties? Hope that helps.
Hi! I was thinking if i should change my username,
My main account is “duarex2″, but I also have two back-up accounts “666vids” and “AwesomeVIRAL”. Plus, I have a partnership with 2DiogoCorreia and I have access to the account “TheFunever”.
Do you think any of these usernames are catchy?
Do you think I should create another account?
Wich one of these should be my main account?
Plz respond ;)
Dear Matt,
My youtube username is DylVerse, like Dylan and universe,i haven’t done anything with the account yet do you think i should strive for a better name? I have no problem with making a different account.I’ll do whatever it takes to stop being a youtube failure!
mmm this reminded me of when i came up with my username…….i don’t remember the other attempts but i got frustrated and just typed “hoperisnear” and well originally i thought i typed “hopeisnear” but it turns out i didn’t and that name was taken by some Japanese band i think O_o….well im still looking for a username and well I’m stumped :( I mostly want a different username because i don’t like the old one but i can’t think of anything. any possible ideas?
My account name is Mydogbarry. I can’t remember how I came up with it but it is pretty easy to remember and all my friends and teachers like it. Really enjoy your videos Matt.
Mine is rather long, but luckily it rhymes! :)
MestizoFilipino
I’ve even been complimented on choosing a good name once… but that was back in the day. I’ve also been complimented on: Calakapepe
That was my original channel that held videos that I don’t seem to enjoy making anymore, I sometimes wish I could start using my old channel again. Since it’s one word, and it’s not even technically a word, so it’s also unique.
But what do you think? Memorable? Average?
My youtube username doesn’t really make any sense grammatically, but it is under the “rules” you wrote. I created it over a year ago. And I haven’t made any videos yet, but I’m planning on doing so. I think I want to create another, because as I said it doesn’t make any sense, but I’m afraid I’ll never get a better username. What would you have done?
Hey, I cant think of any names… I want one like RoosterTeeth. So I listed different kinds of animals that has 2 syllables then listed random stuff that has 1 syllable so in total it makes 3 syllables- so it’ll be easier for people to remember… get me? Please reply ASAP cuz I need help! T_T oh and just in case you dont think of anything, my channel will be all about vlogging and short films :) LOVE THIS ARTICLE BTW <3 ^^
Great post! Adding TV is pure genius!
SimonKikass I suppose.
Jack, it’s the right idea, but I’d be worried that it’s too close to FailBlog, which is obviously a very popular brand already. How about BadVlogger or something?
two*
i have too: CaliforniaSimonRoll and simon KIK ASS
which do u like better?
Hey Matt I was thinking about making a channel with me vlogging, and the only thing i could come up with is FailVlogTV because i’m not a good vlogger. Please give me your input if that is good or what not.
Thanks
Sure, you’re welcome. Quemabocha would be a bit too tough to spell (at least for me!)
I know you’re kidding, but it’s actually quite catchy. Too long though, yeah. How about GoodLookingChub? :)
this is funny… made me think about the time I got my user name… I was trying to get an e-mail account… but everything I tried was already taken… so I typed “quemabocha” which means basically “something so annoying that sets your head on fire”… I think it’s kinda funny…
I’m not going to use it anyways… my friends and I are definetly making a new user. so… thanks!!
Great post Matt. Very appropriate content for an inaugural blog post. I think I’m going to look for GoodLookingChubbyWhiteBoy…is that too many letters?
Dan: I don’t know how you’ve never had trouble when there are something like 300 million account names, but good for you!
Don’t worry about it, Paul. Actually “chompet” is pretty catchy, and 123 isn’t that hard to remember.
Betty: I know what you mean about obsessing over it – I feel the same way. But it IS really, really important. So obsession here is good.
I’ve almost never had much trouble getting the YouTube name I wanted. Certainly never had to put numbers at the end. Still good to keep in mind for future reference. Not a lesson I particularly needed, but you still taught it well. Keep up these little lessons.
Great post! You are really the man! Keep it up! :)
Nice post, Matt! I feel like my account name looks stupid.
When I’m renting at the computer shop, I had to cover the screen while logging in to Youtube because of this weird username I had for years. I have a reason why I used that but it’s not getting many views! HAHA
Look, “Matt Koval”, wow, what a nice username! (Hey, I’m not sarcastic!). It sounds cool, and short and memorable.
I never add numbers to my username, never ever. That’s why I usually spend half an hour to get a proper one. It’s usually along the lines of MassiveMarket, (L’)EnfantTerrible, SheelaNaGig… What you wrote about in your post isn’t just a tip, it’s like an obsession with me. *must have awesome username at all costs*
So yeah, I’m glad I’m doing something right. You’re awesome Matt :D
I’ve tried ever since 2008 to make my channel good. I put a lot of work into it, I spent hours filming and getting cute clips, but nobody seems to like it or watch it. My pets probably won’t be interesting for some people, but I just don’t know why I only get 10-100 views for each video, if even that.
hmm very interesting, your username seems rather professional in my opinion. haha I love happyslip’s story and the name, been subscribed to her for years partially because I liked her out-tro. Sidenote, you would not believe how pysched I was when I saw you two were in a video together. =P
Sure, I like that.
so is MsLeahFace alright?
Thanks Rebekah. And nice blog! I have a little teaching experience myself actually. :)
Thanks for this, Matt! This came at such an appropriate time since I’m considering starting a YouTube account. This was really helpful.
Love your videos and want more!
Great post. How’s Nephduma as a username? haha
Dude, “HuluCanSuckIt” would get my click in a second, haha. Brilliant!
Great post Matt. I’m always making snap judgments of people’s usernames. The hostile psycho comments are always by names like xxrazorblade47x or Timmy2365. I’m hoping I can get the new name HuluCanSuckIt54.
Thanks Marina. I had no idea what I was doing when I chose my username – luckily it worked out pretty well. If only I had picked an easier name for The Fuplers…
Thanks for the tips, I hate people when people’s names are WAYY to confusing. But their videos are so amazing. Your name may not the most exciting, but it is really easy to remember and to tell people about. Thanks again for all of the great tips and I love you videos
That’s good to hear… it’s funny, I think about that all the time. My background is in Advertising/Marketing and it drives me nuts! ;-)
I’m totally re-branding right now and paying very close attention to this type stuff. It’s amazing how much of a killer it can be. One day I’ll be big enough on YouTube to demand that they change it. Then I will feel accomplished and retire! ROFLMAO Just kiddin!
Thanks man! I actually always thought you did the right capitalization… At least, I never had any problem reading your username. :)
WOW! This is for two reasons: 1) Great Post; 2) For mentioning my channel in it! :-)
The biggest mistake I have made on YouTube was the day I set up my account. I typed mybigimagination instead of MyBigImagination… Should have capitalized the first letter of each word!
You hit the nail on the head with this,
